Saskatchewan students from grade 4 to 8 are eligible to participate. Students are asked to create a visual presentation (backboard, video, et cetera), written report including bibliography and be prepared to verbally present their project findings.
We currently have Regional Heritage Fairs in Saskatoon, and Regina, Moose Jaw, and a Community Fair in Yorkton. There is no limit to the distance away a community is to participate in any regional heritage fair, although it is preferred that schools choose a region that is geographically closest to their own community. (Other factors, such as road access, community attachment, and school division ties are also taken into consideration.)
We would love to have Regional Heritage Fairs take place elsewhere in Saskatchewan. Please contact us for more information on how to participate and the assistance available to start up a Regional Fair, or a smaller, Community Fair.
If a school is committed to participating but are located at least 4 hours of driving distance from the nearest existing Regional Heritage Fair, Heritage Saskatchewan is willing to consider that school's Heritage Fair to be a mini-Regional Heritage Fair.
Classroom / School Heritage Fair
In some schools, only one classroom participates in the program. We encourage any teacher interested in participating to take part! Students in grades 3 or lower, as well as in grades 9 or higher, may participate at the school fair.
We encourage these teachers to organize a Classroom Heritage Fair that allows community volunteers to judge student projects and gives students the opportunity to share their learning with their parents and their community. Or a teacher may choose to assess the student’s projects themselves. Every teacher is given the opportunity to decide for themselves what works best in their classroom.
In some schools, many teachers in several grades and classrooms participate in the program. We encourage teachers to organize a School Heritage Fair. Invite community volunteers to judge student projects and give students the opportunity to share their learning with their parents and their community. Or teachers may choose to assess the student projects in a team approach. Every teacher is given the opportunity to decide for themselves what will work best in their school. We recognize that every school is unique and may approach the planning of a School Heritage Fair in their own way.
Extracurricular Club
In some schools, one teacher would like to give as many students from as many grades as possible the opportunity to participate in the Heritage Fair program. You can participate in the Heritage Fair program as part of an extracurricular club. We encourage any teacher interested in giving students this opportunity to take part!

Individual Student
In some schools, one student is interested in participating in the Heritage Fair program. We welcome all students to participate in the program. Please contact Heritage Saskatchewan to discuss this opportunity.
Please see the registration page for more information about registering your school and participating in a Regional Heritage Fair.
If you need support from another experienced teacher who has previously participated in the Heritage Fair program, please contact us.

Regional Fairs
The Regional Heritage Fair includes the opportunity to:
- develop communication skills by presenting Heritage Fair projects to other students, parents, members of the public and judges
- participate in heritage-related workshop activities
- compete for a variety of awards
- meet other students from their region who are interested in heritage
- represent their school in a province-wide initiative
If your school has a general consent form for extracurricular events, that is satisfactory for students to participate in the Regional Heritage Fairs. A specific consent form is not required, other than what is requested on the online registration system.
Student projects will be judged up to three times during the Regional Heritage Fair. Students will be judged in the language selected in the registration system. Judges will utilize a standard judging rubric.
Students may wish to begin their judging by presenting a 2-3 minute oral presentation. The purpose of the oral presentation is to introduce the project and share the important research. Judges will then interview the students about their project so be prepared to answer questions about why the topic was chosen, how the research was done, what the results were and what was learned about the topic. The purpose of the interview is to evaluate the depth of understanding of the student’s topic.
Finalists from the regional level (including Community Fairs and the Virtual Fair), are chosen to move on to compete at the provincial level.
For further information, visit our FAQs page or contact us. Visit the Project Guidelines page for information on project creation.
Teacher Registration
Teachers who want to register their classes/schools to participate in the Regional Heritage Fairs must register (either through the website or by email to Heritage Saskatchewan) by Monday, March 9, 2026.
This is a declaration of intention to participate. All that is needed at this stage is the total number of students creating projects. These numbers are then used to determine how many projects from each school can attend each Regional Heritage Fair.
Visit the teacher registration page to fill out the teacher registration form.
If you miss the March 9 deadline, your students can still participate in the Virtual Heritage Fair!
Student Registration
The deadline for student registration for the Regional Fairs will be announced soon.
Visit the student registration page to register students for the in-person Regional Fairs or submit projects and register for the Virtual Fair.
Please Note: Due to alterations with the registration system as well as the registration process, teachers are no longer able to log in to see who from their class/school has registered already. Teachers are able to save registrations to be completed later.
